Abstract Ceramics

4 March – 30 April 2023

This exhibition of abstract ceramic work has been selected by Martin Smith and will be on display in Wiltshire in conjunction with Smith’s solo show at Messums London. The exhibition will feature work by Natasha Daintry, Nicholas Lees and James Rigler. All of the participating artists have been taught by Smith at the Royal College of Art, and all share an affinity with his work.

Smith himself has pushed the boundaries of abstraction in ceramics by appropriating architecture and ornament in his work. These artists, all of whom have experienced his tutorship and guidance, represent a generation exploring the ceramic medium who have been given licence to experiment. Each artist has developed their own abstract language within the ceramic discipline whilst together they point to a greater understanding of the potential of the medium. They exemplify mastery of technical accomplishment and innovation.

Nicholas Lees

Nicholas has work held in the permanent collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. He has also won an Award of Honour at the ICAA Blanc de Chine exhibition at the Musee des Confluences in Lyon, France.

James Rigler

Work by James Rigler is held by The Victoria & Albert Museum, the Crafts Council UK and the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire.
