CLAY CREATIVE (Chilmark)

Pottery Technical Demonstrator

 

We are looking for an experienced pottery technician and demonstrator to come on board to run our new teaching ceramics studio. The successful candidate will be able to use the studio to develop and create their own work.

Our ideal candidate has previous practical experience of running a studio, kiln firing, clay and glaze management, and delivering ceramic tuition.

-Upkeep of the workshop according to best practice and health and safety standards and be responsible for the clean and tidy presentation of the studio.
-Will be responsible for the best use and care for the studio machinery
-Will organise an annual equipment safety check and be responsible for equipment servicing
-Keeping materials and glaze stock checks
-Ordering in new materials
-Firing and packing/unpacking kilns
-Clay management and reclaim
-Overseeing non-tutored sessions
-Personally running regular tutored sessions
-Be available for bookable tutorials supporting non-tutored studio clients
-Liaise with Messums booking system
-Liaise with the visiting tutors and ensuring that correct materials are in place for one-off topical classes.
-Preparing work for all classes and open access sessions
-Liaise with the studio supporting consultants
-Work closely with and manage the time of the studio rangers

Personal specifications:

Has good knowledge of ceramic practice
Is kind, patient and keen to share knowledge
Willing to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.

This position will require a DBS check

CLAY CREATIVE (Chilmark)

Studio Rangers

 

We have an opportunity for two studio rangers. This position would suit recent university graduate who would like to come to learn via assisting our Studio Technical Demonstrator and our visiting tutors in exchange for being able to use the studio to develop and create their own work.

This is a voluntary position – ranger will exchange their time for free studio use.

1hr of work for 1 hr of studio use

Materials/kiln space will be charged to the ranger or exchanged for further work time.

Ranger will be responsible to negotiate their work, studio time and material usage with the Pottery Technical Demonstrator.

Ranger will need to be willing to organise their hours flexibly according to the studio programme.

To assist the Pottery Technical Demonstrator with:

-Cleaning floor and surfaces
-Glaze mixing
-Clay management
-Kiln packing
-You will be encouraged to speak to our students and help them with questions about studio practice but there is no expectation from you to teach them skills
-You might be asked to assist with running children’s classes. This will be to ensure the safeguarding of the activity not for you to run the activity.
