TALK & SUPPER CLUB: with ceramicist Patricia Low

Friday 1 March 2019

Locally celebrated and internationally recognised, Patsy’s pots are something of an enigma. Hand built vessels and also painterly masterpieces it is not surprising therefore that they have found their way into collections of all hearth and hue. It has not been an easy journey from being fired as junior editor on a newspaper to firing her own works, Patricia’s story is as complicated and entertaining as the work itself. We are delighted that Patricia will be joining us here at the gallery for what promises to be a highly enjoyable and informative talk. Please book on to join us for an artists supper afterwards if you would like to.

Patricia trained as a painter at Swindon and Chelsea Art Schools and continued to paint until in 1986 she made her first clay coil pot. Hand building for her was an epiphany and gave her the scope to develop making and painting combined, bringing together an object and a narrative.

To achieve the intensity and luminosity of water colour in ceramic, Patricia uses raw oxides which have a painterly quality that she can layer and scumble. The image is in monochrome until glazed and fired. Her subject matter is inspired by her surroundings on the Hampshire/Dorset border.

“Collectors of her work have had to be patient. Unfashionably unhurried, she has made all her technical advances by painstaking experimentation to achieve in her work what David Inshaw has described as quiddity- its own essential nature.” Patrick Bourne

Patricia will join us in the Mess Restaurant after her talk for our regular artist’s supper club.  Do come along and join us for an informal and fun evening with a menu devised by head chef Sunny Sin and The Mess Restaurant team. With the Chinese celebrating new year throughout February, Sunny has created a special oriental feast:
