During this workshop a child and adult or family group will be able to hand build a vessel which will be embellished & decorated with figures and/or quirky creatures. Demonstrations will be given on two simple vessel making methods and ways of creating figures & creatures. During the afternoon session you will be able to attach figures/creatures to the vessel and decorate further if required.
Lexa trained at UCA, formerly West Surrey College of Art & Design, Farnham where she first became interested in building and firing kilns using locally available solid fuels. She has had many fascinating research travels in various parts of the world including Malawi where she spent a few years working in potteries. Subsequently she worked with charities assisting & training potters in Nepal & Tanzania. Lexa has run numerous workshops in schools, colleges, universities & community arts centres. At her workshop on a farm near Trowbridge, Wiltshire Lexa produces a diverse range of work including thrown functional pottery , abstract hand-built forms, small heads, figures and occasionally quirky creatures. Much of her work is inspired by her interest in the environment and alchemy, together with the lengthy process of collecting, preparing & processing materials for wood-firing.
The cost of materials and firing is included in the cost of this course. You will be encouraged to fire only your best work and the teacher will be able to advise you on this. You will use slips to decorate your work which will be transparent earthenware glazed by us for you. If you wish to collect your work biscuit fired so that you can paint it at home, please tell the tutor.
You can collect your finished work three weeks after the course.
