In this course with Ursula Waechter, you will examine letter formation, letter weight and spacing.

Weachter has been working with this type of lettering for more than 30 years and will be guiding you through the complete process that she uses for painting a word or sequence of words using letter shapes called Versals.

Weachter started to use a combination of painted designs with names and dates to produce commemorative pieces whilst working at Aldermaston Pottery. The design of Versals involves several different elements; usually an infilled outline and added serifs. These letterforms were developed in the 9th century Carolingian Renaissance and used for ornamental initials in illuminated manuscripts.

Ursula Waechter completed her BA Hons degree at Bath Academy of Art in 1983. In 1986 she joined Alan Caiger-Smith’s studio the Aldermaston Pottery where she learned about tin-glaze and wood firing. She set up her workshop in Greenham near Kingsclare specialising in brush decoration on tin-glaze.

The letters are executed using a fine pointed watercolour brush (size 0 or 1) with oxide mixture on paper. You will have the opportunity to then paint one or two tiles.

This is an introduction to calligraphic brushwork painting for the use on ceramic surfaces. In this workshop with Ursula Waechter you will be able to examine calligraphic brushwork from the historical and contemporary perspective.

You will be shown how to use signwriters’ chisel brushes, hakeme type and decorators’ brushes to experience the difference in mark making. You will also look at the importance of the white space that is left around the marks.

The aim will be to experience brushwork as a language and work towards painting a complete, cohesive design.

We will be able to practice by using poster paints and oxide mixtures on paper and later on to create a design on up to two ceramic tiles.

Bring:

– Sensible shoes and clothes, apron and old towel.

-Your own selection of brushes or purchase specialists brushes on the day.
