In this course with our sculpture tutor Finn Bush you will look at the figure through examining the textures of the earth as it appears in the practice of sculptor Lawrence Edwards currently exhibiting at Messums Wiltshire Gallery.
Lawrence Edwards’ figures seem to emerge from the earth, leaves, and weeds, float from the ocean or splinter from ice. Using a range of free sculpting and construction techniques create figures exploring expressive and sketch-like clay textures, you will look, reflect, and create a series of maquettes and miniatures representing the human figure.
The cost of this course includes material allowance of 8kg per person and at the end of the session, you can either choose to take your sculpture home unfired, or you can opt for us to biscuit fire your work to make it permanent. Once you collect your piece biscuit fired, you can choose to paint it at home using any paint or you can return to glaze your piece in one of our glaze sessions.
Clay tutor Finn Bush is experienced in working both in education and the decorative arts practice. Ceramics has been Finn’s major means for expression right from earliest childhood attempts in his parents’ studio and during his creative career he developed a direct ‘hands on’ attitude to the use of materials and expanded his knowledge mainly on a ‘trial and error’ basis. He studied painting at art school but he believes in the freedom of vision offered by the material knowledge. Through his teaching Finn seeks to bring character and sense of freedom to the materials he uses.
Bring: apron, pencil, notebook. Please wear closed-toe shoes.
