Messums Wiltshire is delighted to announce the third iteration of our Material: Wood exhibition, which this year features a solo response to the barn by American master craftsman and pioneering wood maker Christopher Kurtz as well as a group exhibition in the Long Gallery and Pod looking at artists who make wood both their subject and material of artistic endeavor.
Material: Wood will also include a focus on woodcuts, with an exhibition of prints by contemporary artists including Mamma Andersson, whose recent works explore the passage of time with multiple layers of colour and delicate drawing that lay bare the meticulous process of creating by hand; and Max Wade whose practice of abstraction creates prints suggestive of a half remembered places or experiences. These will be shown alongside twentieth century woodcuts by artists including Edward Wadsworth, whose cool and impersonal style made him one of the leading figures in British Vorticism.
More sculptural pieces and objects by artists who have made wood their key material of artistic expression will also be shown in the Long Gallery and Pod including those by Wycliffe Stutchbury, whose exquisite studies composed of forgotten timber have been described as ‘studies in the narrative beauty of wood’ and which explore texture, colour and process. His most recent work ‘Scorched’ – a densely forested installation of hand-crafted and hand-scorched objects – celebrated wood and its place within artistic making.
