Messums Wiltshire is pleased to announce its second annual Clay Festival 30-31st of March this Easter bank holiday weekend. The festival will include talks from the most respected individuals in making and collecting as well as a full day of activities for children, adults and demonstrations from revered artists.
The festival will commence with an evening talk with Antonia Boström, Keeper of Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics & Glass at the V&A. Interviewed by our curator Catherine Milner, Antonia and her extensive knowledge will lead us through a survey of clay sculpture from the dawn of time to contemporary British greats such as Grayson Perry. Boström holds her PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art, where she specialised in Florentine Mannerist sculpture. She has published widely on sculpture and is editor of the three-volume Encyclopaedia of Sculpture (2004).
On the Saturday, we will be having demonstrations, talks and audience interactive making sessions by the best potters and makers around, including Sandy Brown, Duncan Hooson and Margaret O’Rorke. We will have a live feed of the details of the demonstration blown up on a large screen. Whilst making the artists will speak about their careers, their artworks as well as their making and practice.
A lunchtime talk will follow in the barn with artists from our current exhibition ‘Material Earth: Myth, Material & Metamorphosis’, Claire Curneen, Sam Bakewell and Malene Hartmann Rasmussen each will be discussing their work for 15 minutes. The talk will be chaired by Annie Warburton from the Crafts Council.
Workshops for adults and children will take place in the Long Gallery. Have a go on a potter’s wheel, used in the shaping (or throwing) of round ceramic ware. In the marquee outside we will have workshops for children. Make your own mythological animal or creatures in the morning and print using clay and natural materials in the afternoon.
Tickets are available for individual talks and events, alternatively a Festival Demos & Talks Ticket allows access to all the demos and talks in the barn gallery. Complimentary tea, coffee and use of the friends lounge above the pod is also included with this ticket…read more
