Messums Wiltshire is a leading multi-purpose gallery and arts centre. It offers artists and collectors a unique environment to experience and engage with creative endeavour. From the position that artistic expression started in our distant past, it provides the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the handmade across multiple art forms.
The galleries are open to the public Wednesday – Sunday. A day a week is set aside as free to access for schools to exclusively use as part of a broader educational remit that includes makers courses available to the public. Whether you are interested in acquiring, experiencing or learning about art we hope you will find time to visit us.
There is a direct trainline from London Waterloo to Tisbury station which is 3 minutes from Messums Wiltshire. All our events are arranged to allow our London clients time to return home on the last train. In addition, a collection service to and from Tisbury train station is available for all events. Driving we are 6 minutes off the A303. For further information on travel, directions and accommodation please visit this page.
Set inside the 13th century barn gallery is our free standing pod, designed by architects Stiff and Trevillion, where we offer a changing selection of individually crafted and made objects that celebrate creativity of makers in this country.
Messums Wiltshire opened in Autumn 2016 after a two year restoration project. To see some of the work that took place to restore the barn at Place Farm, please click on the attached video.
Our one year anniversary in September 2017 was marked with the opening of the Long Gallery, an old dairy which lies perpendicular to the main tithe barn. This new permanent exhibition gallery focuses on two-dimensional works of art including paintings, drawings, etchings and photographs to complement programming in the barn. The gallery has a long panoramic sweep of a glass window, viewing straight onto the rolling hills of the Fonthill Estate, once owned by the greatest collector of the 19th century, William Beckford. In addition, we have opened the Mess Restaurant offering brunches, lunch, cakes and drinks as well as our monthly Supper Clubs with a guest artist.
The landscape surrounding the barn is an area of outstanding natural beauty and provides an inspirational backdrop for visitors to a year round programme of exhibitions, events, workshops and performances.
